This work is a commentary on aging and disenfranchisement of the elderly in the United States of America. This piece also includes a racial component, addressing issues of the underrepresented.
Notice the overwhelming sense that the old gentleman has as he looks at the very prized gold leafed framed work of art, focused on his next journey into the vastness of space and time.
All of the furniture, as well as the younger man, have shadows extending off the canvas. The younger man’s shadow is bold and vibrant making his mark on the world. But, the older man, along with his cane, that device that so many people, including this artist, fear, representing dependence, have no shadows. Yes. Even their shadows are rejected by American culture.
Regardless of that, the younger man stretches and leans over to the older man. He slides his chair closer to put his hand upon the shoulder of the other saying, “I will help you on your way.”
This work is a mix media of Acrylic and hand-made papers on canvas. You might notice a bit different style here and you would be correct! I created this piece after being awestruck at a show on the work of Jacob Lawrence. I suppose it dove deep into my artist soul.
